The work begins with a search
Hi, I’m Reut.
My relationship with Japanese paper began when I was ten. Years later, I found my way back to it as an artist, and eventually to Chiyogami.
Today, I rarely begin with a finished image in mind. I search through patterns, colors and details until something catches me, a movement, a shape, or an unexpected connection between two papers.
From there, I cut, layer and rearrange, following what begins to emerge.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Reut Akerman is a contemporary collage artist based in Brookline, Massachusetts, creating original hand-cut works from traditional Japanese Chiyogami papers.
Working entirely by hand, she searches within existing patterns for fragments that can take on new forms, movement and relationships. Through cutting, layering and rearranging, the original patterns are transformed into compositions that emerge gradually through the making.
